Resolution and Color
The resolution, or DPI (dots per inch), is how much detail is in an image. The higher the resolution, the more details which means the larger the image can be printed. An in depth discussion on resolution is available at What is a Megapixel? Image and Photo Resolution. Make sure you are creating and exporting your graphics at 300 DPI at 100% final printed size.
Printers use a four-color process called CMYK. This stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key, which is the color black. This allows for rich, accurate color matching from your computer monitor, which displays colors in RGB or Red, Green and Blue to the final print.
Text and Images
You may have a fancy font in your software, or a specific typeface for your logo that the printer’s computer may not have. In order to ensure your text prints just like you see it on your screen, you need to turn all text to outlines. This makes it an image instead of trying to find the correct font.
In Adobe software, select the text. Then go to the “Type” menu and select “Create Outlines.” Make sure to do this for all text areas in your artwork.
Many Adobe software programs will allow for linking to an image saved on your computer when creating a new graphic thus creating a smaller file size. However, when sending a graphic for print, all images need to be embedded in the print-ready file.
Be sure that all images embedded in the final graphic are of the highest resolution possible and not stretched or altered or distorted.
The bleed is necessary in order to properly size your graphic for print. It’s a cushion or a bit of wiggle room for the printer. A sufficient bleed is 0.5” all the way around the printable area of the graphic. This allows for compensating for material issues and wrapping around hardware. Make sure that artwork and text aren’t too close to the edges as it is difficult at best to guarantee they won’t be cropped off.
Preparing and Saving the File
Finally, make sure there are no spelling and grammar issues and double check that the artwork you’ve used is not taken from a Google search that may cause copyright issues in the future. The preferred file types to save your graphic in are tiff, eps, ai, psd and press quality pdf at the highest resolution possible.
